Poem – “The Rose That Won’t Wilt” – 3/25/2025

Too determined
to never let go,
to never become tired
of all I'd ever thought,
when I had been
convincing myself
of your place.

You were a resident
in a heart, now vacant,
now wishing for
the lights to be on
another second longer.

I've been smothering
the most noticeable
memories, the ones
that come across
if to keep telling me
that you're listening.

I've been hearing
what keeps rushing
in these veins.
You are swimming
within these wires,
still connected,
even when it's me
who evicts you.

I repel everything
that comes back
into nothing.

Just fallen leaves
that are unraked,
unwanted by
their spot
from up high.
