Poem – “These Years That Follow” – 5/16/2025

Subtle footsteps
still go swiftly
when following from
shadows behind,
where light melted
to form a shade.

Something tells me
that feelings will,
at last, be reversed
when I am reviewing
what I've rehearsed.

It will be when I
recognize what sounds
I've been echoing
while stuck in this maze,
losing sleep from what I
had vowed to keep.

Corners toss me,
flavors confuse me
when I am deep
in this interconnected
passion, from memories
still too colorful.

I am what continues me
staying here, counting
whatever dots that I
believe are the stars
to be guiding me.

I must be what saves me,
building another world
in place of the last,
letting lessons be learned
after I've made that turn
where I cannot go back.
