Poem – “Leave Your Thoughts at the Door” – 6/13/2025

Be the one to leave,
knowing when to leave
your uncovered thoughts
at Heaven’s gate,
while you exit Hell
or the one place
you couldn’t tell
was either morbid black
or a vacant white.

As I held your heart
dear to me, close to me,
all you found out
was that there was no one
in the world like me.

What’s real is what
terrified you to want to
see me like those who
reduced you to
a lonely nothingness.

You found the door,
as I have to be the one
to evict you
from my mind.

You found that exit
all too easily,
because you’re skilled
at snap judgments.

Love connected our eyes,
presented our beating hearts
to the warming sunlight.

But you were always
expecting more of the same,
waiting upon your knees.

You hoped I would crack
to be proven right,
to let yourself fall back
to frigid, familiar plight.

That was only me
showing a side of myself
I could no longer hide.

Why should I pretend
to be what I’m not?

I’m no superhero
without a weakness.

I’m merely a human
who’s licking his wounds.
