Poem – “Being Careful” – 6/18/2025

I’ve drawn back
the promise I gave,
the humanity I have -
of what’s left
to give myself.

I’ve redrawn a path,
letting moonlight shine
on history with all
it’s unfortunate,
degrading misfortune.

I’m being careful
not to turn around,
looking ahead
to see no more
of what’s dead,
to see what’s more
for this life of mine
to be wed.

I’m seeing the stars
unfold their radiance
onto numerous scars,
as I pray for grace
to present me
with needed space.

I hold hope as a torch,
discouraging me from
going overboard.

For I can quite easily
plunge into the depth,
just to return
to have quite barely
scratched the surface
of what awaits.

I can quite easily
get lost in another
place of measureless,
dreamless darkness.

Being careful gets me close
to what’s getting closer,
when I get further
from all the remorse
that gets farther.
