Poem – “Too Late, Too Early” – 6/18/2025

We were too late
to find somewhere else
to be moved, to remove
the sadness that closed
our final chapter.

Our fates were held
before an early sunrise,
while our ending
came too late
after final matters.

You were with me
through only the thin,
retreating beyond doors
that allowed us in.

We walled ourselves,
choking on the air
that blanketed our flesh,
that curtained our eyes.

We began to deprive
our love of its life,
our mouths of our kisses,
while we began to bury
our knees into earth.

We prayed to Heaven,
while thoughts let us race
at its speed, towards
a destination, one that came
too late to flee from.

It came too early
before we saw it
upon us,
among us,
standing on its own
to remind us.
