Poem – “Despite the Fear” – 7/29/2025

I was here,
racing your heart,
pulling up to
that entombing spot
to see it, to believe in it -
the depth of you,
the face of you
I cannot undo
from memory.

Despite our distance,
despite what concerns
there was, to your
twisting fate,
I couldn’t comply
with tragedy’s sake.

Wanting all what
we were chasing after
even under clearest,
purest skies.

Waiting for what
it meant to us,
living for each breath
we’d take to our death.

Close together,
sown into a knot,
one not undone
when hands were hot,
while eyes were locked
on the finish line,
on that entrance
letting us leave behind
the water, the cries.

Despite the fear,
we fought to come near,
we destroyed what
walls were built up
to keep us divided.
