Poem – “A Captain to a Broken Vessel” – Personal Poetry – 2/21/2020

By

What she says
To me, atop the waves,
“You are my captain, and we have been through the storms
To see the newest light, at the furthest reaches.”
Thunder is lighting her eyes
As echoes of how I screamed.

I cannot abandon my vessel.
But, it is already broken, already bleeding.

What she notices of me,
Creating the waves with my tears
Atop the waves, a singular droplet adding another storm,
“I am the vessel,
Broken, though am I not creating the waves, by what I bleed?”
Love left me, long ago.

I cannot abandon my vessel.
But, it is already broken, already bleeding.

Love is stored atop shelves
As bookcases in my wandering mind.
The waters spread before me,
Are seemingly next to nothing
But the tears I keep releasing.
Love has left my solid heart
And all I see is death.
I say to her, “I have abandoned the only thing, worth awakening.”

I thought to not abandon my vessel,
But, she will tread these waters, alone, bleeding the trail forth.

What hurt she has felt,
Due unto my absence!
What pain we have felt,
Due unto love’s absence!
